Latest Poll: LIHOP At 11%

Public Policy Polling did a survey of various conspiracy theories; 9-11 Trutherism fell way down the list:

5% believe exhaust seen in the sky behind airplanes is actually chemicals sprayed by the government for sinister reasons

15% of voters think the medical industry and the pharmaceutical industry “invent” new diseases to make money

Just 5% of voters believe that Paul McCartney actually died in 1966

11% of voters believe the US government allowed 9/11 to happen, 78% do not agree

Some may get annoyed at a few of the questions designated as conspiracy theories; for example:

Voters are split 44%-45% on whether Bush intentionally misled about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. 72% of Democrats think Bush lied about WMDs, Independents agree 48-45, just 13% of Republicans think so

While conservatives will probably not be happy with this one being included:

37% of voters believe global warming is a hoax, 51% do not. Republicans say global warming is a hoax by a 58-25 margin, Democrats disagree 11-77, and Independents are more split at 41-51. 61% of Romney voters believe global warming is a hoax

Personally I don't think it's a hoax, but I do think that the media has overstated the negative consequences at times and completely failed to set the proper example on many occasions. My personal favorite was when NBC sent Meredith Viera and a camera crew (and I'm sure a makeup specialist and other support personnel) to Australia to do a special live report about how serious global warming is. Hello!

The one question that I think they completely blew is this one:

Do you believe aliens exist, or not?

I certainly believe alien life forms exist somewhere in the universe; I do not believe they have visited Earth.

BTW, there are some interesting results on the 9-11 question in the crosstabs. The young (18-29) are much more likely to believe in the LIHOP theories than the old (over 65) by 18%-7%. There's not a huge difference between very liberal (14%) and very conservative (11%) on the question; moderates were the least likely to say yes at 8%. More Obama voters (13%) than Romney voters (8%) said yes to LIHOP; that may be more due to the age differences than anything else.

With you on alien life, Pat. I mean, if life can exist in such inhospitable environments as hot acidic volcanic lakes, or the stratosphere, or in Lake Vostok, under miles of Antarctic ice, then one has to think it's possible to exist in inhospitable environments everywhere. Add in all the planets we're discovering outside our solar system, and I would think the likelihood is very high.

And while I'm sure there are many global warming deniers who fit the conspiracy theorist bill, many people are just low-information and don't really get the distinction between weather and climate. You see polls where more people believe global warming after a heat wave, or a powerful hurricane hits, but then stop believing it after a blizzard, or an unusually cold month (like the March we just had).

Lots of stuff to chew over in the crosstabs.

It's interesting that so many are so certain that bin Laden is still alive or that he's dead when there's no evidence for the former and we just have to take the government's word for it for the latter.

Some polls in 2004 were skewed because they only called landlines, and many young people do not have landlines. I wonder what the demographics of the sample was. Also, I don't participate in telephone polls because I've had inquiries in the past that I feared might have been from my employers or prospective employers, so I wonder how many people refused to participate in the poll at all.

That age group appears inherently more susceptible to crackpot ideas. Chemtrails are nearly matched with 9/11 Truth, and lizard people aren't far behind.

Puzzling exception: that's also the most likely group to believe Oswald acted alone. Somebody explain that.

Who cares what people who were born a decade after the US left Vietnam think about it? Who cares what ANYBODY thinks about Vietnam in 2013?

Brian, it's not 1968 anymore. Try living in this century for once.

Brian is hilarious when he uses words he doesn't understand, like "bromide", in an attempt to seem intelligent.

Brian, if people in their 20s want a failed war fought on dubious grounds, they've got plenty to choose from in the past decade. I understand why a fossil like you would still think Vietnam is important, since your life wasn't the abject failure it is now in 1968. You still were in your glory days, before failing out of San Jose State, and then moving from one menial job to another while living with your parents.

If the young think Vietnam was not a mistake, then they're likely to do it again.

Actually, "the young" are more likely to invest in a textile factory in Vietnam. You live in a fantasy world.

You jeer at the frustration of the victims of 9/11 in their quest for answers. You're a scumbag.

I didn't say I was a victim of 9/11, Ian. I said you were jeering at the widows' frustration.

28% believe in a sinister NWO, but only in 11% are 9/11 Twoofies? That means that even among NWO crackpots, 9/11 Twoof is only a minority stance.

4% believe in lizard people?? I'd be surprised if 4% even ever heard of such a thing! Clearly, respondends exaggerate their wooish beliefs, don't you think?

"Aliens exist" are commented on enough - there is no reference to a conspiracy here. Did the NWO create aliens, or suppress evidence? Or rig the philosophical or scientific arguments?

"Global warning" is more a matter of opinion, as the scientific data and theories are extremely complex, vast, cannot be beheld by amateurs, and there is only so much scientific consensus. So when the question is "Do you believe global warming is a hoax?", what do people actually repy with - their opinion on whether the consensus opinion is merely wrong (either just mistaken or deliberately invented/manipulated), or whether some group created this as a hoax? I am sure a significant proportion of the "yes" votes comes from people who think there is no man-made warming, but also don't think it's a hoax. And the converse: Some "no"-votes may come from people who think there is no man-made warming, and also don't think it's a hoax.

28% believe Saddam involved in 9/11 - this is truly sad.

Definite evidence, I agree. But I still wonder about their polling methodology. Did they do something goofy, like only call land-liners, to skew their results?

The 11% is very strange. The most recent poll I know of is the Scripps-Howard that found that 36% found LIHOP very likely or somewhat likely.

Maybe the problem is that it was framed as "Do you believe LIHOP--yes or no?" Though I consider it the most reasonable explanation for what happened, I would have to say no, I don't "believe" that's what happened. I don't know what happened. That's why we need honest and complete investigations.

Different doesn't mean strange. Maybe the number used to be 36% but years of Truther incompetence has reduced it to 11%. Maybe the Scripps-Howard methodology was skewed. Why the presumption that some arbitrary poll is accurate and shouldn't change?

No. The Challenger commission failed to explain the descent dynamics of the shuttle pieces, the size and distribution of the debris field, the flashes trailing the right wing at T+45 seconds, the timing of the separation of the crew cabin from the body of the shuttle, and the degree of crookedness of the smoke plumes following the explosion. Also, the Commission neglected to search for thermite and explosive residues and failed to model a simulation that matches the video footage of the disaster. We need a new witch hunt--er, investigation--that is honest and complete, goddammit.

RGT, mostly people change their opinions based on new information. There is little new information about LIHOP, and what there has been since 2006 (some refinements to the Able Danger story, the Behrooz Sarshar story, and the Mark Rossini story for instance) is all supportive of LIHOP suspicions.

Only simple-minded people would base their opinions about facts on their feelings about a movement.

Is anyone fooled by these kooky petitions?

Jeez. Look on JREF, for starters. Lots of members are engineers and have expressed broad (though rarely perfect) agreement with NIST.

Saying that one must be "free of professioal ties to NIST" is just a slick way of dismissing firms like Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, researchers like Bazant & co-authors, and most anyone who studied the collapses professionally and likely would have had at least some interaction with NIST at some point.

RGT, mostly people change their opinions based on new information.

The failure of significant new information to emerge is, in itself, new information. Any group that underdelivers on its promises for seven years will suffer diminished credibility.

AB, when you demand that I do YOUR homework and go looking among a bunch of anonymous liars at JREF who may or may not claim to be engineers, you're only proving my point.

You can not name even one independent architect or engineer who will publicly endorse NIST's collapse sequence.

1830 independent architects and engineers are not satisfied with the official investigations. You can't name even one who will say that he or she is.

The reason to dismiss Simpson Gumpertz & Heger is because under contract they did the FEA for NIST. It would be highly unprofessional of them to criticize the report done by their own client, and they wouldn't do it. They thus have a conflict of interest so any expression of confidence on their part in the NIST report is meaningless.

At 06 April, 2013 10:57, Blogger snug.bug said...

RGT, the group that underdelivered on its promises is the government. The 9/11 Commission promised to provide a “full and complete accounting” of what happened on 9/11 and NIST's objective was to explain "why and how" the buildings collapsed. Neither has done so.

The National Institutue of Standards and Technology is what the big kids call a prestigious organization. They actually make the world a better place. Someone who has worked on a NIST is not someone guilty of anything other than being gifted. It's like working with NASA.

The better question is why have none of the AE911Troofers never worked for NIST? Incompetence? Never got the call to the big show? Could their disdain for NIST actually be jealousy?

I think so.
